Recycled Rack
Mason scored a pretty sweet bike rack for us yesterday. While they were installing a new one at work, he asked what they were going to do with the old one. They were just going to throw it in the dumpster! So, he asked if we could have it. It's a little big for the courtyard, but it's pretty awesome. People sure do love to throw perfectly useful things away.

That's a great idea! I enjoy purchasing lightly used second hand items but I know a lot of people that find the whole idea of second hand items repulsive. I've been called "cheap" and "poor" on other blogs when I have indicated that I buy furniture off Craig's List. Personally, I don't really care what others think and say but I do have a few items around the house that i am tired of and would like to get rid of like an old shabby sofa. The sofa is in great shape albeit dusty and wonky and very uncomfortable. I've had enough use from it and am ready to pass it over to another's hands to use. So I am also one of those people that might throw away perfectly good things when I am tired of them and need a new change.
It's so sad that people would call you cheap or poor for buying used. I'm probably overly proud of the fact that I rarely buy anything new. It's less expensive, almost always better for the environment and things that were made 30-100 years ago were generally of much higher quality than their counterparts of today.
As far as your shabbby sofa goes, I totally understand needing a change. After you find a replacement, you should give it away on Craigslist! What's shabby to you may be awesome to someone else. We almost never have to throw anything out because someone is always willing (and usually extremely excited) to come take it home.
I totally agree with you. I have found some great pieces of furniture via Craig's list. In my neighbourhood, if you put something out on the curb (that is in descent shape) for the garbage truck to pick up, someone else will usually pick it up at night before the truck get to it. Even if I were to put my sofa outside with a sign that reads "free" it is bound to be put to good use by a neighbour. However, I could just as easily post it on Craig's list for $25 and see what kind of a response I get.
