Vegan Deep Dish

deep dish pizza

Mas and I both have much love for pizza. We put on pound after pound in college ordering and devouring huge, deliciously greasy Pizza Shuttle pies. We probably eat just as much pizza now, but (1) we make it ourselves, and (2) it's healthier, vegan and not at all greasy.

Deep dish pizza is actually a really veganizable food. Because the cheese in a deep dish is layered on the crust and topped with sauce, there is no missing the bubbly, gooey topping when you omit it or replace it with a less melty vegan substitute. Mason just took some dough from the freezer and patted it into the bottom and up the sides of a greased 9X13 cake pan. We spread it with some homemade tofu ricotta and topped that with diced onions, peppers and Field Roast Italian sausage. Field Roast sausages can make anything taste like pizza. (I've decided to cut out most processed foods and make all of my own seitan, but haven't found anything close to as good as Field Roast in the Italian sausage department. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.) We poured sauce over the rest of the toppings and baked it for about 20 minutes at 400F. It was the complete opposite of the pizzas that we normally make, which was a nice change. And it was extremely filling, so we had leftovers for days--also a nice change.

your crust is perfect! it looks doughy and wonderful - oh my goodness! mmmmmmmmmm! i really like the idea of the sauce on top, too! i've never had any of the field roast yummies - i'm kind of afraid to try them because i hear they're good and i can see myself opening another door to deliciously addictive fake meats! ahahahaaa! right now we mock sausage by using crumbled tempeh and sausage type spices - but i'm sure it's not the same.

oh man, we're gonna have to make a deep dish soon - dan used to looooove deep dish pizza - and we haven't made homemade pizza in forever! i am digg'n the deep dish! superw00t!

Oh, wow! This looks so good! I've not tried Field Roast sausages, but you make them sound delicious.

Great job on this pizza!

I love thin crust as opposed to deep-dish pizzas in general, but any pizza is good pizza in my book and that looks really yummy!
