No Picture, Just a Tip

Steamed broccoli + Swiss Fondue from Vegan Vittles = Amazing!
It tastes just like broccoli casserole. This fondue recipe is pretty much my new favorite thing to make. We had breadless ruebens today. Sauteed cabbage and onions with seitan pastrami, sauerkraut, swiss fondue and homemade thousand island dressing. I didn't bother with the camera because it was super ugly, but it tasted great. Have I ever mentioned how much I love Vegan Vittles? It was my first vegan cookbook, and it's still my favorite.

Is It Spring?

bikes all day

I hope so. We finally got to spend a day riding all over town. It's been too cold lately to actually enjoy being outside, but it was in the mid-seventies yesterday and it's going to be nice (if a little rainy) all week. I packed up a lunch, Mas aired up our tires, and we rode to the Goodwill on Greenville, over to Paperbacks Plus in Lakewood, up to Tietze Park to picnic, up further to Buffalo Exchange, back down to Lula B's and then to Fiesta to pick up some fresh veg for dinner.

the cookbook for people who love animals

While at Paperbacks Plus, I found this cookbook full of tasty looking vegan recipes. This is the seventh edition from 1992, but it's still in print if you want to order your own.

It's A Good Mail Day

the joy of vegan baking

My copy of The Joy of Vegan Baking just came in the mail (along with another awesome package that I'll post about later). I haven't even had time to open it, but I'd say that there's a 99% chance that I'll be baking tonight. I'm so excited!

Crock Cheeze

crock cheeze

For the last month and a half, I've been putting off grocery shopping. We were really busy from mid-October through my birthday, and after that, I was waiting for Veganomicon to arrive (it's not even shipping until Friday--yet another boo!). Tonight, we decided that it couldn't be put off any longer, so we spent about two hours at Whole Foods and Fiesta buying a ridiculous amount of food that should allow us to put off the shopping for at least another month. By the time we got home, we had a ton of food and no energy to cook any of it. I had finally remembered to buy miso at the store, so it seemed like the perfect time to try the Crock Cheeze from Vegan Vittles. I tossed all of the ingredients in the food processor until they were smooth and stuck it in the fridge for an hour while we watched the new episodes of Weeds (whoa!) and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Pre-tasting had determined that it was pretty much the most delicious dip ever, and it was even better after it set up. I'm pretty sure that I'm now one of those vegans who says that things taste like cheese when they actually don't at all, but who cares because it really does taste like cheese to me!

Joanne Stepaniak Is Awesome

At Half Price this weekend, I found a well worn copy of Vegan Vittles in the clearance section for $1. I've only heard good things about this book, so I was extremely pleased. Mason and I made the Macaroni and Cheeze (p. 124) the same night. It was looking pretty iffy when we put it in the oven, but it turned out to be our most successful vegan mac attempt by far. The fresh bread crumbs are genius.

Sunday night, I made the Muffins That Taste Like Donuts (p. 62). I thought that they were more coffee cake-like, but Mas said that they were definitely donut-y. The entire batch was gone by the next morning. Next time, I'm thinking of using a melon baller to make donut holes and maybe coating them in powdered sugar after they've baked.

Next Up:
Ground Seitan (p. 38), Seitan Pastrami (p. 39), Tofu Bacon (p. 40), Flaky Pie Crust (p. 44), Classic White Uncheese (p. 72), Crock Cheeze (p. 74), Kale & Kraut Sandwiches (p. 105), Better Burgers (p. 106), Chick-peas a la King (p. 119), Cauliflower Paprikash (p. 120) and the Ultra Fudgey Fudge Brownies (p. 149).
